Andy Hamer qualified from Bristol and trained in orthopaedic surgery in Bristol, Sheffield and Melbourne. He was awarded an MD from Sheffield university in 1996 in bone graft research before his NHS consultant appointment in 1998.
Andy Hamer was a medical student in Bristol, where he first developed his interest in Orthopaedic Surgery. At this stage, he was given an award of merit by the Cutlers Company for a new device to warn surgeons of glove perforations. It did not make him his million! He then moved to a registrar post in Sheffield where he has stayed since. He was awarded an MD from the University of Sheffield for his work on allograft bone strength in revision hip surgery in 1997. He was then awarded a Wishbone Trust travelling fellowship in 1997, and spent his fellowship in Melbourne, Australia in 1997-1998 furthering his subspeciality training. He was appointed as a consultant to the Northern General Hospital in 1998 with a special interest in hip and knee arthroplasty and revision surgery. He currently organizes medical student teaching in Orthopaedics for the University of Sheffield, and is the Chairman of the departmental clinical governance committee. He has an active role in research into hip and knee replacement surgery, He is married with three daughters, and enjoys outdoor pursuits including sailing and motorsport.
